Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees up to 24(–28) m tall.

Stems: Bark gray or brown, furrowed, young branches pubescent, soon glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves compound (odd-pinnate). Opposite. Blades 15–28 cm long, leaflets 5–9, (5–)7–11 cm long, 2–5 cm wide. Apex long-acuminate. Base cuneate. Upper surfaces glabrous, dark green; lower surfaces pale green, puberulent along midrib, covered with peltate glands; petiolules 3–13 mm long. Margins irregularly serrulate. Petioles 6–10 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in panicles 13–20 cm long. Flowers unisexual (and the plants dioecious); buds paired, covered with brown, finely pubescent scales. Calyx minute, 4-toothed, valvate. Stamens 2(3), inserted on corolla tube alternate with the lobes, abortive in pistillate flowers; anthers dithecal, oriented back–to–back, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, 2-carpellate, 2-celled; ovule placentation axile; style slender to broadened and compressed; stigmas 2, dry.

Fruit: Samaras with 1 terminal wing; oblong–elliptic to oblong–oblanceolate; 2–4 cm long; the wing 5–6 mm wide; apex with a small notch. Seeds 1 per fruit.
