Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Herbs to 1 m tall, with stolons and watery juice.

Stems: Flowering stems to 30 cm.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades elliptic, ovate, or broadly ovate, 2–9 X 2–6 cm. Base truncate or subcordate. Surfaces glabrous. Margins ciliate with hairs 0.1–1 mm. Lateral veins to 5 pairs. Short-petiolate. Stipules absent or vestigial.

Flowers: Flowers in pedicel 3–5 cm. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Sepals narrowly triangular, ca. 9 mm, densely ciliate, without glands. Corolla funnelform, tube cylindric, bluish purple, tube 1.2–1.5 cm, limb 3–5 cm in diam, lobes obliquely truncate, spreading, shorter than tube, overlapping to left. Stamens 5, inserted just below middle of corolla tube; anthers short, applanate, apex puberulent. Disc glands 2, ligulate, alternating with ovaries. Ovary superior; styles filiform; pistil head ringlike, apex densely hairy.

Fruit: Follicles 2; spreading; ca. 5 cm; cylindric; striate. Seeds glabrous.
