Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Climbing annual herbs.

Stems: Stems up to several m long, glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades broadly ovate with a basal sinus, 3.5–7 cm long, 5–10 cm wide, shallowly palmately 5–7–lobed. Lobes acute or acuminate, the central lobe long-acuminate, the narrow apex often breaking. Upper surfaces hispid with simple white hairs; lower surfaces glandular pubescent on main veins. Margins lobed, lobes denticulate. Petioles 2–4 cm long, glandular pubescent. Stipules absent; tendrils in the stipular position 2–4–branched.

Flowers: Flowers in staminate flowers in panicles 5–12-cm long, peduncles 4–9 cm long, glandular pubescent, pedicels 3–6 mm long, short–hispid; pistillate flowers 6–9 per head, peduncles 0.5–1 cm long, glandular pubescent, subsessile or on pedicels up to 1 mm long. Flowers usually unisexual (and the plants monoecious or dioecious), actinomorphic. Calyx of 5 sepals, inserted on hypanthium. Corolla of staminate flowers greenish yellow, 5-lobed, 4–7 mm in diameter, petals inserted on hypanthium alternate with calyx lobes, usually connate at base, the limb often rotate; Corolla of pistillate flowers 5-lobed perianth usually smaller than in staminate flowers. Stamens in staminate flowers (2)3(–5), inserted at base of hypanthium; filaments connate into a column; anthers curved or flexuous, coherent and twisted in a head, opening by longitudinal slits; pistillate flowers: staminodes absent. Ovary inferior, of a single carpel or 3-carpellate with carpels connate into a single 3-lobed cell; ovule 1, placentation parietal; stigma capitate, shortly 3-lobed.

Fruit: Fruit pale brown; ovoid; 5–7 mm long; 3–4 mm in diameter; 5–ridged; the ridges bearing a few spreading outgrowths 1–2 mm long; pilose with multicellular hairs; reticulate–hispid between ridges; indehiscent. Seeds 1 per fruit; ovate; endosperm absent.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Occurring in shrub communities on clay loam. A single collection from Moloka'i may also represent this species.

Elevation Range: 0–500 m.
