Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 3–11 m tall, new growth densely yellowish brown appressed hirtellous, ± becoming glabrate.

Stems:

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades elliptic, oblong–elliptic, oblong–ovate, elliptic–ovate, or oblong–obovate, 3–18(–25) cm long, 1.5–3(–14.5) cm wide. Apex rounded to obtuse and sometimes emarginate, or sometimes acute and minutely acuminate. Base cuneate or rounded and ± weakly emarginate. Upper surfaces glabrous or midrib short–hirtellous; lower surfaces ± sparsely short–hirtellous, often becoming glabrate, midrib sparsely to densely short–hirtellous, sometimes puberulent or glabrate; blade coriaceous. Margins entire. Primary lateral veins prominent, usually 10–20 pairs, ascending, connected by an arched vein 1–5 mm from margin, venation pinnate, lateral veins connected by an arched submarginal vein, higher order venation forming a reticulate pattern. Petioles 7–56 mm long, but at least some of them more than 10 mm long, short–hirtellous to glabrate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers 1–5(–11) in hirtellous to sparsely or densely puberulent or glabrate, axillary cymes up to 6 cm long, peduncles 7–38 mm long, pedicels 5–20 mm long, slightly clavate just below calyx, bracteoles 1–5 mm long, minutely puberulent, bracts small, opposite. Calyx of 4 sepals; sepals imbricate, staminate flowers with sepals deltate, 2.5–4 mm long, puberulent, often densely so, pistillate flowers with sepals ovate, 2.5–3 mm long, puberulent. Corolla of 4 petals, valvate, staminate flowers petals narrowly deltate, 6–8 mm long, puberulent or glabrous, pistillate flowers petals deltate, ca. 6 mm long, puberulent or glabrous. Stamens 8, in 2 whorls, distinct, reduced but always present in functionally pistillate flowers. Ovary superior (pistillate flowers), 4-celled and 4-lobed, carpels connate, only slightly distinct at apex to almost entirely distinct, densely yellowish brown tomentellous; ovules 2 per cell, hemitropous, 1 ascending; style 1, 2.5–3 mm long, short hirtellous, terminating in 4 short stigmatic branches, Staminate flowers ovary densely yellowish brown tomentulose; style ca. 1.2 mm long, short–hirtellous.

Fruit: Capsules (16–)25–40(–50) mm wide; carpels connate ¼–⅓ their length; (8–)12–24 mm long; straight or somewhat reflexed; exocarp finely puberulent; especially around base; sometimes nearly glabrate; endocarp glabrous or sparsely puberulent; usually only near suture. the carpels dehiscing along the upper suture; exocarp. Seeds usually 2 per carpel; 6–9 mm long. glossy black when ripe; crustaceous; ovoid; sometimes angled from compression; embryo straight in fleshy endosperm; radicle short; cotyledons compressed; ovate; putamen brown; warty.
