Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Subshrubs.

Stems: Stems erect to ascending, 1.5–5 dm long, essentially glabrous, often swollen at the nodes.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite or whorled. Blades oblanceolate to linear or lanceolate, 25–80 mm long, 2–11 mm wide. Apex acute to acuminate. Base leaf bases often connate around the stem. gradually tapering to base. Surfaces ciliate toward base, otherwise glabrous. Margins entire. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in open, paniculate or corymbose cymes, glabrous to sparsely pubescent throughout. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Pedicels 8–23 mm long. Calyx 5-toothed, 7–9 mm long, 10–nerved, glabrous to sparsely pubescent, the lobes obtuse, margins scarious. Corolla of 5 petals; petals white, blades ca. 6 mm long, notched, with a 2-lobed scale at base. Stamens included in calyx tube. Ovary superior, 1-celled or incompletely 2–4 celled, on a well–developed stipe that is adnate to the staminal filament bases and petal bases (referred to as a carpophore); styles 3(4–5); Carpophore 1–2 mm long.

Fruit: Capsules oblong–ovoid; 3–celled in the lower part; 8–9 mm long; dehiscent by 6 or rarely 3 apical teeth or valves. Seeds reddish brown; reniform; ca. 1 mm long; papillose.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Very rare; known from relatively dry areas to mesic shrubland.

Elevation Range: 330–1,900 m.
