Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrubs or trees 3–10 m tall, bark smooth, pale brown, new growth usually yellowish brown or reddish brown puberulent, sometimes becoming glabrate.

Stems:

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades narrowly to broadly elliptic, oblong–elliptic, or elliptic–ovate, sometimes thinly so, 5.5–20 cm long, (2.3–)3–8 cm wide. Apex obtuse to rounded or sometimes subacute, ± emarginate. Base cuneate to truncate or weakly cordate. Upper surfaces glabrous or midrib sometimes sparsely puberulent; lower surfaces glabrate to sparsely puberulent, especially along midrib, or densely tomentose; coriaceous. Margins entire, flat or revolute. Primary lateral veins 7–18 pairs, somewhat prominent on lower surface, venation pinnate, lateral veins connected by an arched submarginal vein, higher order venation forming a reticulate pattern. Petioles 12–45 mm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers usually 3–27 in sparsely to densely puberulent or densely short–pilose, axillary cymes, peduncles 3–30(–45) mm long, pedicels 4–6 mm long, bracteoles puberulent, bracts small, opposite. Calyx of 4 sepals; sepals ovate, 2.8–3.1 mm long, densely tomentulose, imbricate. Corolla of 4 petals; petals valvate, often reddish within, oblong–deltate, 4–4.5 mm long, tomentulose. Stamens 8, in 2 whorls, distinct, reduced but always present in functionally pistillate flowers. Ovary superior, densely yellowish brown or golden tomentulose; style hirtellous, ovary 4-celled and 4-lobed, carpels connate, only slightly distinct at apex to almost entirely distinct; ovules 2 per cell, hemitropous, 1 ascending; style 1, terminating in 4 short stigmatic branches.

Fruit: Fruit 16–34 mm wide; of distinct follicles 8–17 mm long; exocarp densely golden brown to reddish brown short–pilose; the hairs sometimes yellowish green; endocarp densely pilose.fruit; the carpels dehiscing along the upper suture; exocarp. Seeds 1–2 per follicle; 4–7 mm long; glossy black when ripe; crustaceous; ovoid; sometimes angled from compression; embryo straight in fleshy endosperm; radicle short; cotyledons compressed; ovate; putamen brown; warty.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Occurring in dry forest and sometimes mesic forest.

Elevation Range: 610–1,220 m.
