Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades oblong–ovate, 6–18 cm long, 2.5–7 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Base cuneate, truncate, or rounded. Surfaces glabrous. Margins dentate, with leaf–opposed tendrils; margins with opposed teeth. Palmately veined. Petiolate. Stipules present.

Flowers: Flowers in reddish-purple umbellate cymes. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx indistinctly 4-lobed subtruncate. Corolla of 4 distinct petals, apex hooded, reddish violet, green toward apex, ca. 4 mm long. Stamens 4, opposite the petals; filaments distinct, slender; anthers dithecal, introrse, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, 2-carpellate, 2-celled, sometimes incompletely so; ovules 2 per cell; style 1; stigma small.

Fruit: Berries globose or obovoid; dark red; 2–2.5 cm in diameter. Seeds 1(2).
