Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Plants 2–7 dm tall.

Stems: Caulescent.

Roots: Taproots slender.

Leaves: Leaves compound (ternate to pinnate) or simple and pinnately lobed. Alternate. Blades ovate, 3–15 cm long, 2–10 cm wide. the leaflets flabelliform, cuneate, 1–2 cm long, 0.5–1 cm wide, toothed or incised; upper cauline leaves pinnately dissected, the ultimate divisions linear to filiform, 2–15 mm long, 0.5–1.5 mm wide. Surfaces glabrous. Margins dissected. Petioles sheathing. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in involucel dimidiate, the bractlets linear, 2–4 mm long. rays 2–8, 1–2.5 cm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect); Pedicels 2–5 mm long. Calyx teeth ovate–lanceolate, 0.5–0.8 mm long. Corolla of 5 petals; petals white or rose, oblong with a narrower inflexed apex, the outer petals radiant. Stamens 5, inserted on an epigynous disk. Ovary inferior, 2-celled; ovules 1 per cells, anatropous; styles 2, usually swollen at base into a stylopodium. Styles slender, the stylopodium conical; carpophore 2–parted.

Fruit: Fruit 1.5–5 mm in diameter; globose; subterete; mericarps boat–shaped; glabrous; not readily separating at maturity; primary ribs 5; filiform; the secondary ribs filiform or obscure; vittae absent. Seeds 1 per mericarp; embryo small; endosperm cartilaginous. seed face concave.
