Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Tree to 20 m tall. The large, spherical crown typically contains about twenty–five to thirty ascending, spreading to drooping leaves.

Stems: Smooth, grayish trunk 20–30 cm in diameter.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Spirally arranged. Blades rounded and shallowly divided only about one-fourth into many stiff-tipped segments 1.8 m wide and long; nearly flat blades held on equally long leaf stalks, the latter moderately covered along both edges at the base in medium tan fibers. Surfaces rich green above and mostly green below but with a few tan scales or glabrate, not waxy or glaucous. Epidermis darkening considerably on drying. Veins parallel. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences longer than the petioles, ca. 150 cm long with up to five long primary branches that nearly equal the leaf stalks in length. Panicles ca. 30 cm long, 2–branched, individual axes 5–6 cm long, glabrous, terete (cylindrical), zigzag–sinuous between the alternate, rather distant flowers; rachillae villous-lepidote; prophyll and peduncular bracts rigid, covered with fugacious, silvery or brownish paleae, finally almost glabrous. Flowers bisexual (perfect), sessile. Calyx cupular, shallowly 3-lobed, prominently nerved or smooth when dry. Corolla of 3 petals, adnate basally to the staminal filament tube to about the height of the calyx, the distinct lobes valvate in bud, caducous as the flower expands, prominently pocketed and furrowed within, prominently nerved when dry. Stamens 6; filaments flattened, thickish, connate basally into a tube equaling or exceeding the calyx and surrounding the carpels, then distinct and abruptly subulate, not inflexed at apex; anthers erect in bud, dorsifixed, spreading–erect to versatile at anthesis, oblong in outline, bifid basally nearly to the point of insertion, apex emarginate, the connective narrow; anther sacs longitudinally and laterally dehiscent. Ovary superior; carpels 3, normally only 1 maturing, coherent only basally; ovules 1 per carpel, with the broad–based styles connate above into a trigonous column tapering to a shallowly trifid stigma; ovules anatropous, erect, attached at the base of the placenta.

Fruit: Fruit somewhat variable in shape; ovoid to globose; apparently usually not quite symmetrical; 3–3.5 cm long; 2.5–3 cm in diameter. When heavily laden; the fruit stalks hang down below the leaves; often resting against the skirt of old; persistent dead leaves. Seeds distinct from endocarp except at the hilum; shiny; endosperm homogeneous except for a shallow invagination of the seed coat below the raphe; embryo lateral near the base opposite the raphe.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Found in wet forests on the eastern slopes of Kīlauea.

Elevation Range: 1,100–1,270 m.
